Dementia: 13-19 August

An estimated 47 million people globally live with Alzheimer’s, 850,000 of these within the UK and this is likely to increase to around 1.2 million people by 2040. Alzheimer's is now the leading cause of death among older people and reportedly costs the UK around £26 billion a year; more than the combined cost of cancer, heart disease and stroke. However, only a fraction of 1% of this cost is spent on research. Part of the problem is that the failure rate for new drugs is around 99.6% (compared with 81% for cancer therapies).

A international study reported in the Lancet last month stated that although dementia is diagnosed in later life, brain changes usually begin to develop years before. Although 65% of dementia risk is beyond a person’s control, nine lifestyle factors (which are modifiable by the individual) have been found to contribute the remaining 35%: mid-life hearing loss, failing to complete secondary education, smoking, failing to seek early treatment for depression, physical inactivity, social isolation, high blood pressure, obesity, and type 2 diabetes. The report’s authors have urged people to act now in order to improve their lives and transform the future of society by continuing to learn throughout life and keep healthy.

PRAY for people living with dementia and their families as they seek to support them. Pray for church groups which provide support or assistance to the elderly. Pray for greater investment in dementia research, especially in relation to the prevention and treatment of dementia.

News of the week

  1. Last weekend, 18 people were killed in a gun attack in the capital of Burkina Faso, believed to have been carried out by Islamist extremists. On Saturday, a woman died in Charlottesville in the US after a man drove his car into a crowd of protesters during clashes between far-right supporters and counter-protesters. Earlier this week in France, a girl died and 13 others were injured when a man deliberately crashed his car into a pizzeria. Up to 13 people are feared dead and dozens injured after a van drove into a crowd of people in Barcelona yesterday.

PRAY for all who have been affected by the recent attacks in Africa, Europe and the US. Pray for security forces in the UK and across the world as they work to combat terrorism. Pray for measures to be taken in the UK and across Europe to prevent the current trend of cars, vans and lorries from being used as weapons.

  1. The transportation company Uber has been accused by police of failing to report sexual attacks and other serious crimes committed by its drivers, and of obstructing officers trying to investigate them. Transport for London is currently reviewing information provided by the police as it decides whether to continue to let Uber operate in London for another five years.

PRAY for a thorough investigation into the allegations against Uber. Pray for the safety and security of the public as they use licensed transport. Pray for fairness for all those working in the "gig" economy.

  1. More than 300 people have been killed near Sierra Leone's capital, Freetown, after heavy rains caused mudslides and flooding. The number of casualties is expected to rise as hundreds of houses have been submerged. Around 2,000 people have been left homeless.

PRAY for all those who have lost loved ones and their homes in the floods and mudslides in Sierra Leone. Pray for a swift international humanitarian response to the situation. Pray for our Government to do what it can to provide support to aid agencies and the government of Sierra Leone.

  1. BREXIT: The Government published a paper this week setting out its proposals for a temporary post-Brexit deal with the EU. Ministers confirmed that the UK will leave both the customs union and the single market when it exits the EU in March 2019, but hope that the temporary deal will provide certainty for businesses and avoid economic disruption by providing more time to prepare for the new customs arrangements. It will also allow the UK to make independent trade deals with non-EU countries (which, as a full member of the customs union, it is currently not able to do).

PRAY for the negotiations between the EU and the UK regarding the customs union and single market. Pray for clarity and strength within the UK negotiating team. Pray for a smooth transition for businesses and individuals as the UK leaves the EU. Pray for God to oversee the final relationship between the EU and the UK and ensure the best possible result regarding issues of security and trade.
