A Time to Pray

The LORD is righteous in all he does, merciful in all his acts. He is near to those who call to him, who call to him with sincerity.

Psalm 145:17-18

Prayers from the heart

Week 10th January to 16th January 2021

Sunday

Keep us, good Lord, under the shadow of your mercy in this time of uncertainty and distress for many people. Help us to remember the words of Psalm 56v3-4 which says “When I am afraid, I will trust in you. In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust; I will not be afraid.” Please sustain and support the anxious and fearful and lift up all who are brought low. Please give us the confidence to trust in you, our solid rock, in a world of uncertainty. May we rejoice in your comfort, knowing that nothing can separate us from your love in Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen.

Monday

Caring Saviour, we give thanks for the work of Age UK and all the helpful information, advice and services they provide. Lord, we are aware that in England alone there are about 500,000 over 80s who may be lonely and have no one to turn to. We pray especially for those who may be unwell, living on a low income and don’t have close family or friends to help keep their spirits up. We lift them to you now and in your precious name, we pray. Amen.

Are there any elderly folk in your neighbourhood that you can reach out to?

Tuesday

God of all Comfort, we bring before you all those facing hardship and struggling to keep warm during the winter months. Please give them wisdom to know the best way of heating their homes and staying comfortable throughout the day. Thank you that Winter Fuel Payments and Cold Weather Payments are available for those who need them. In your Son’s name. Amen.

Wednesday

Father of mercy, we praise you for all the faithfulness and love shown by individuals and churches across the United Kingdom during this last difficult year. May our hearts be open to trust and follow all that you have in store for us in 2021. We pray particularly for the Archbishops of Canterbury and York at this time as they provide spiritual guidance to our nation. Your word in Psalm 146v5-6 reminds us of those “whose hope is in the Lord their God, the maker of heaven and earth, the sea and everything in them. The Lord who remains faithful for ever.” Amen.

Are there any local church leaders you can pray for or support in some way?

Thursday

God of mission, send your Holy Spirit to give vision to churches planning outreach events for 2021. Please grant wisdom to their actions and power to their witness. Help our churches grow in numbers, in spiritual commitment to you and service to our local community. May we remember the words of your Son Jesus to “go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son of the Holy Spirit” and in his name we pray. Amen.

Friday

Gracious Lord, we pray for all college and university students who have become harder to reach by Christian Unions as a result of Covid-19. Give wisdom to Christian Unions, we pray, as they decide effective outreach strategies and which students to focus on. Please provide them with opportunities to engage with students from least-reached nations who have little chance of hearing the gospel in their own countries. For your glory, we pray. Amen.

Saturday

Righteous Judge, please have mercy on our land, where so many reject your ways. Remind us, we pray, to uphold in prayer, parliamentarians and others who seek to protect human life, encourage marriage and families and promote justice for those who are oppressed. Help us to remember that “the eyes of the Lord watch over those who do right and his ears are open to their prayers.” In your mercy. Amen.
