Prayers for Parliament and the Nation: Friday, 1 February 2019

" I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people – for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Saviour, who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. "

- 1 Timothy 2:1-4

  • Roads across large parts of the country have been closed as a cold snap hits the UK. Temperatures have been as low as 6F (-14.4°C) in parts of Scotland. More disruption is expected today.

  • Steve Chalke, who leads Oasis Waterloo church in London, has announced that they were launching an appeal to help the homeless. By providing them with Oyster cards, travelling on public transport at night would offer them some respite from the cold.

  • Unilever is stockpiling Magnum ice creams and deodorants on both sides of the channel amid growing fears of a no-deal Brexit.

  • Professor Colin Baigent, director of the Medical Research Council, has said everyone aged 75 and over should be offered statins as a way of cutting up to 8,000 deaths each year from heart disease.
