Prayers for Parliament and the Nation: Friday, 15 December 2017

" I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people – for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Saviour, who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. "

- 1 Timothy 2:1-4

  • Prime Minister Theresa May was applauded after giving a speech in Brussels. EU leaders said that “sufficient progress” had been made to move to the next stage of the Brexit negotiations – where issues such as trade and security can be discussed. The next round of talks on a transition deal for the end of Brexit are expected to begin as early as next week.

  • Survivors of the Grenfell Tower fire six months ago have attended a memorial service at St Paul's Cathedral, alongside members of the Royal Family and the Prime Minister Theresa May. Bereaved families, survivors and rescue workers were joined by the Prince of Wales, the Duchess of Cornwall, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry. The Bishop of Kensington, Graham Tomlin, said he hoped the tragedy would represent a "time we learnt a new, better way".

  • The UK's most senior military officer has warned of a new threat posed by Russia to communications and internet cables that run under the sea. Air Chief Marshal Sir Stuart Peach, the chief of the defence staff, said Britain and Nato needed to prioritise protecting the lines of communication. He said it would be an "immediately and potentially catastrophic" hit to the economy if they were cut or disrupted. The cables criss-cross the seabed, connecting up countries and continents.
