Prayers for Parliament and the Nation: Friday, 16 February 2018

" I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people – for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good and pleases God our Saviour, who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. "

- 1 Timothy 2:1-4

  • At least 17 students are dead after a 19-year-old man opened fire at a high school campus in Parkland, Florida, police have said. Nikolas Cruz, a former student at the school, has confessed to the killing. It is the deadliest school shooting since 26 people were killed at Connecticut school Sandy Hook in 2012.

  • The British charity Oxfam is accused of concealing the findings of an inquiry into claims that staff used prostitutes while delivering aid in Haiti in 2011. Since the allegations came to light, more than 1,270 people cancelled their monthly donations to the charity in just three days.

  • The Church of England is urging Christians to give up single-use plastics during Lent, in a bid to cut the environmental damage it can cause. Worshippers in each of the Church’s 42 dioceses have been offered tips to cut plastic use, for each day up to Easter. The Church linked it to a Christian calling to "care for God's creation.”
