Prayers for Parliament and the Nation: Friday, 20 April 2018

" I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people – for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Saviour, who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. "

- 1 Timothy 2:1-4

  • In a House of Commons debate about anti-Semitism on Tuesday, several Labour MPs criticised the Labour leadership for not doing enough to deal with anti-Semitism within the Labour party. MPs from both sides of the house read out hate mail they had received, simply for being Jewish or for showing solidarity with Jewish Labour members.

  • Theresa May has apologised to Caribbean leaders for the government's treatment of the Windrush generation, after a campaign backed by bishops and MPs highlighted their plight. The prime minister said she was 'genuinely sorry' for the anxiety caused.

  • The events director of the London Marathon has warned runners to think carefully before wearing bulky costumes at this year’s event. Temperatures are predicted to be 23C on Sunday, the day of the race.

  • High street coffee chains and restaurants are rushing to take plastic straws and stirrers off their shelves ahead of any legal ban. Starbucks has removed all straws and plastic cutlery and McDonald’s will trial paper straws, starting next month.
