Prayers for Parliament and the Nation: Friday, 25 May 2018

" I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people – for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Saviour, who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. "

- 1 Timothy 2:1-4

  • Tough new data protection laws, known as the General Data Protection Regulation or GDPR, come into effect today. They are intended to strengthen consumer rights for all European Union citizens. However, there are concerns that many firms have not done enough to prepare for the new laws.

  • People in the Irish Republic are voting today to decide whether or not to change the country’s abortion laws. At present, abortions are only allowed in cases where the mother’s life is at risk. The result will be announced on Saturday and is considered too close to call.

  • North Korea has said it is still willing to talk "at any time in any form" after US President Donald Trump abruptly cancelled his proposed meeting in Singapore on 12 June with Kim Jong-un. The summit would have been the first time a sitting US president had met a North Korean leader.

  • In an interview with US TV chat show The View, US bishop Rt Rev Michael Curry said that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex personally chose the Bible reading from the Song of Solomon for him to preach on at their wedding last Saturday. His sermon entitled "The Power of Love" was heard by 2 billion people worldwide.
