Defence: 16-22 July

Over the next 10 years, Britain’s military could face a deficit of £10-20 billion, due primarily to the increased cost of buying and supporting equipment. Plans for a £1.8bn fleet of Apache helicopters are apparently under threat, as is the Government's pledge for a 50,000 fighting force capable of deploying within five years. Despite this, the MoD has gone ahead with purchasing US-built F-35B Lightning II Joint Strike Fighters for the RAF, described by Defence Secretary Sir Michael Fallon as the "most powerful" fast aircraft in history. Each jet costs between £77 million and £100 million, but some suggest the cost could be far greater in order to cover spare parts (the jets have been plagued with various problems) and software upgrades (there are concerns over shortcomings in the jet's technical systems leaving them unable to function properly and vulnerable to cyber attack). There are also concerns that the "stealth" F-35 cannot transmit data to British ships and older aircraft without revealing its position.

PRAY for Sir Michael Fallon as he considers how best to equip our military and ensure their safety and the best possible defence of the UK. Pray for all problems with the new RAF jets to be resolved. Pray for appropriate attention to be given to technological issues to ensure that the military is safe from cyberattack.

News of the week

  1. Last week, two teenagers carried out five acid attacks across London in the space of 90 minutes. A 16-year old has been charged with 15 offences, including GBH. With acid attacks on the increase, the Government has confirmed it will review current laws and guidance to restrict the sale and possession of corrosive substances and treat the most dangerous substances in the same way as knives. A parliamentary debate, led by Stephen Timms MP, will take place on Monday.

PRAY for the recent victims of the London acid attacks. Pray for good attendance by MPs at the debate in Westminster on Monday. Pray for proposals to amend current legislation to be brought forward and considered without further delay, and for the general public to be safeguarded from further attacks.

  1. The House of Commons has adjourned for the summer recess. MPs will return to Westminster on Tuesday 5 September 2017.

PRAY for all MPs to have the opportunity to relax and spend some time with family and friends during the summer. Pray for politicians to return to Westminster in September open to hearing and following God's guidance. Pray for wisdom for all MPs in respect of the larger issues including Brexit, terrorism, education and the NHS.

  1. Grenfell Tower Disaster - In the immediate aftermath of the Grenfell Tower fire, huge quantities of donations were received. In total, more than 170 tonnes of donated items have been collected but only around 6% of this has so far reached the residents of Grenfell Tower. Around £20 million has been donated by private individuals and businesses to various charities and appeals and the Government pledged £5,500 in emergency funds for every household which lost their home. However, so far less than £800,000 has been given out.

PRAY for survivors of the Grenfell Tower fire who are still waiting for financial and practical support to rebuild their homes and lives. Pray for new, permanent accommodation to be arranged as soon as possible. Pray for emotional support as they continue to work through the trauma.

  1. With many divisive issues facing the Church (including same-sex marriage and gender issues) and Christians who hold traditional Biblical views being targeted as "extremist", there is an increasing need for unity within the Church and for different denominations to come together before God in prayer for our nation.

PRAY for Christians to unite before the Lord in prayer. Pray in accordance with 2 Chronicles 7:14, that the Church (in all its denominations) would humble itself, pray and seek God's face, and lead the nation in repentance so that God would heal our land. Pray that there would be a national day of prayer similar to that observed in 1940.

  1. BREXIT: Last Monday, the UK’s Brexit secretary, David Davis, held further, more detailed Brexit talks with chief EU negotiator, Michel Barnier. The priority remains reciprocal rights of EU nationals abroad. Although there is no likelihood of any agreement before the end of the summer, EU leaders will decide by late October whether “sufficient progress” has been made on Brexit in order to allow future trade talks to begin.

PRAY for David Davis and the UK's Brexit negotiating team. Pray for God's guidance in all aspects of the negotiations. Pray for a deal which is fair, beneficial to the UK and provides assurances to EU nationals abroad and businesses concerned about future trade.
