Nationwide Christian Trust celebration
Prayer image prayer Guide for Parilament and the Nation

Media: 8 December-14 December

Every day we are exposed to constant streams of news, images and information through radio, TV, newspaper, advertising, PR and online technologies such as blogs and social media. This unrelenting media flow has been and continues to be hugely influential in shaping our culture and transforming our society. Many Christians have found the media world (especially new online media technologies) hard to understand and have, therefore, failed to engage with it. However, events such as the Arab Spring and the Syrian crisis show how the media has a vital, positive role in our society. It does this by keeping people informed, giving the voiceless a voice, holding the powerful to account, highlighting injustice and challenging opinions.

Pray that churches can use social media as an evangelistic tool to talk with people of all faiths and none, sharing ideas and stimulating discussion.

News of the week

  1. The Conservative Party have won the General Election with a majority of 80, after a campaign lasting six weeks. The turnout was 67.2%. The Prime Minister has promised to work “night and day” to repay the trust of voters after he led the Conservatives to an "historic" election victory. Speaking in London, Boris Johnson said it was a mandate to take the UK out of the EU next month “no ifs, no buts.” Jeremy Corbyn has said he will not fight another election as Labour leader. This comes after the party was swept aside in its traditional heartlands.

Pray that people throughout the United Kingdom will accept the election result. Ask that the divisions in the country stirred up by Brexit will start to heal.

  1. Aung San Suu Kyi, the leader of Myanmar, has denied that the military in her country acted with “genocidal intent” against the country’s Muslim minority. This comes during a genocide hearing at the International Court of Justice in The Hague. The case was initiated by the West African state of Gambia. It relates to a severe crackdown in Myanmar’s Rakhine state, which caused 740,000 Rohingya people to flee to Bangladesh. The tribunal has no enforcement powers but its rulings are final and carry significant international weight.

Pray for the families of the more than 10,000 Rohingya people who have died. Pray that the court reaches a just and fair verdict.

  1. The knife crime epidemic in London shows no sign of slowing down. The latest murder took place in Hornsey, North London, just after 6pm on Monday night. A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in custody. This brings the total number of murder investigations launched by the Metropolitan Police this year to 132.

Pray for the families of all those who have been murdered. Pray for a marked reduction in knife crime during 2020.

  1. Train services on routes run by Greater Anglia have been subject to disruption. This is because the 169 new trains it planned to introduce have been delayed. The delay is due to a near miss on a level crossing in Norfolk three weeks ago. Network Rail said engineers and signalling experts were working to identify the problem.

Give thanks that no one was injured in this near miss. Pray that the new trains provide a reliable and comfortable service for passengers.

  1. Here at the Nationwide Christian Trust, our Christmas Carol Service is on 18th December at 11.00am. There will be no charge for this event, although Christmas lunch is available afterwards for £22.50. Our first Ladies Day for 2020 is on 30 January. Reona Joly will be speaking on the subject of ‘The Bible, the World’s Bestseller.’ New volunteers for our Prayer Line are always welcome. Please contact us if you would like more information, or to become part of this ministry.

Please pray that God will bless these events and help to empower all who attend in their walk of faith. Pray that it will be the culmination of a successful year for NCT with lives changed and souls won for Christ.
