Christmas: 22 December-28 December

Christmas Day is seen by many in the retail sector as the biggest commercial opportunity of the year. People are encouraged to spend more money at Christmas than at any other time of year. Whether it be buying food and drink or the latest “must have” for the children, this is the time when everyone is encouraged to spend, eat and drink more.

However, one of the many downsides of this behaviour is that it can push poorer people further into arrears than they otherwise were. Additional credit card debt associated with this extra spending can take six months or more to pay off. In all this, many Christians feel the wonder of the Incarnation and the message it brings to all humanity has been lost.

Pray that more people will stop to wonder at the miracle of the Incarnation. Give thanks that numbers attending cathedral services on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day have increased by 13% over the last 10 years.

News of the week

  1. Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison has denied that climate change is the reason for so many bush fires currently sweeping the country. He said he believed there was no clear link between the fires and climate change. This comes after fires destroyed 900 homes and claimed 12 lives. The Australian PM has said that coal provided 60% of Australia's electricity, 50,000 jobs and was the country's biggest export.

Pray for all those affected by these bush fires. Pray that the country experiences lower temperatures and significant rainfall in the coming weeks.

  1. After an extraordinary parliamentary session dominated by Brexit and the general election, the House of Commons and House of Lords rose for the Christmas recess on 20th December. They are both due to return on 7th January.

Pray for all MPs and Peers to enjoy a time of rest and refreshment over the Christmas period. Pray for God to prepare their hearts and minds ready for the coming year.

  1. The Queen’s Christmas message is viewed by many millions of people worldwide. In 2015, it topped the Christmas Day television ratings, with nearly 7.5 million viewers tuning in across the BBC and ITV.

Thank God for the Queen and her readiness to speak of her Christian faith. Pray that she continues sharing the importance of her faith. Ask that many will have been touched by her Christmas message this year.

  1. Here at the Nationwide Christian Trust, our first Ladies Day for 2020 is on 30 January. Reona Joly will be speaking on the subject of ‘The Bible, the World’s Bestseller.’ Marilyn Baker and Tracy Williamson will be speaking on ‘From The Inside Out’ at our Ladies Day on 27th February. New volunteers for our Prayer Line are always welcome. Please contact us if you would like more information, or to become part of this ministry.

Please pray that God will bless these events and help to empower all who attend in their walk of faith. Pray that it will be the start of a successful year for NCT with lives changed and souls won for Christ.

Christmas: 22 December-28 December

Please use these prayers both in your individual and church prayer times to hold the nation and its leaders before God in prayer and with thanksgiving (1 Timothy 2:1-4).
